Getting old is a pain in the neck! Literally and figuratively! I am trying to figure out the benefits of getting older and I am not coming up with a very long list. You built a library of experience; I guess that must count for something. There is new generation of telecom professionals that have no idea what a cross bar switch is, but so what. Nobody is really missing buggy wipes either. In the old "Bell System" (I have really dated myself now, as Google demographics tell me my readers were born post breakup) there was a specific regulation against the interconnection of analog telephone lines on an PBX. Now part of that restriction was the Bell System being a bunch of anti-competitive jerks, but there were also real technical issues for not doing so. Analog lines are most useful in man-to-man communication. The issue here is the concept of "answer supervision" and "calling or callED party disconnect".

When you answer the ringing phone in your house, the answer supervision is actually your ear. You can "hear" the other party. Yes, there is a line reversal or voltage change but being a two-wire loop is nothing like being a trunk line. For that reason we use trunks to interconnect machines to machines. Every go to make an outside phone call, and find someone on the line? Great example of "glare" the concept of a call ringing in just as you where grabbing it to make an outside call. Analog lines are good for key systems with winking and blinking line keys that show everyone who is on what line, but they are a real annoyance on a PBX system.

Answer supervision is poor if it exists at all and glare can be a real issue. Throw a couple of Centrex lines in the mix and you will get some real extra fun features. Nothing like having analog lines connected to your PBX that have feature treatments you did not know about. It is always phone when the phone companies VM picks up before your ShoreTel VM system does! As a rule you might like to have one analog line at a site for 911 and power failure, but the idea of running a ShoreTel PBX with a rack full of analog lines, actually makes me ill. Judas Grunt, it is the 21st century already! Can you spell SIP?

ShoreTel does a reasonably good job with analog lines given the real disadvantage they have in the area of answer supervision, etc. ShoreTel actually goes off hook on these lines at timed intervals. If it does not "hear" dial tone, it marks the line out of service. If you are really cleaver, there is a trick to recording the sound made when the line goes "off-hook" so you can retrieve the wav file and play it back locally. A great lifesaver when you are in Portland and your trouble shooting a local loop in a remote site, just outside Minute, ND and nobody is in the office.

It amazes me that we still have analog lines on PBX systems, but as long as we do, we might as well learn how to deal with them

Many people will not feel comfortable in a home filled with guns and this could have a material effect on their choice to buy yours. While your tastes should not be considered indicative of the entire neighborhood, many people may look at your lovingly tended collection of .357 Magnums and decide that this neighborhood is a little too trigger-happy for them. It's probably not true (we devoutly hope!), but it could affect your home's sale.

2. Hunting/Fishing Trophies

Your collection of 10 point bucks or record-setting salmon may make for exciting dinner-time conversation between you and your friends, but to some buyers they are a collection of murdered Bambis. Take them down and pack them carefully so that they can shine with glory in your next home and not give a prospective buyer the willies.

3. Pets

This is definitely not a call to get rid of Fluffy or Rover; quite the opposite! While you may not notice the presence of a pet, some non-pet oriented buyers will, even if it stays politely away from them. Unless your home is a working kennel or cattery, having pets around during a walkthrough is pretty much a no-no. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum and keep an eagle eye out for stray hairs. Get a non-pet owning friend to give your home the "sniff test", as you have become used to the smell of your pet and may not notice a faint odor. Give your kitty or puppy a vacation in a friend's home or a kennel/cattery while your house is being shown and it will reduce the likelihood of someone eschewing your house because a hated member of Canis or Felis is in residence.

4. Sexually Themed... anything

You and your social set may think that your velvet drapes featuring a couple in flagrante delicto are daring and beautiful, but the person touring your home will probably not. As a nod to their sensibilities, exchange your favorite drapes for something a little less artistic. The same goes for your library of erotica and any aides d' amour that you might have as shelf decorations. The hooks in your bedroom ceiling should probably be removed as well, unless you plan to hang a plant or something on there.

5.War Memorabilia

Collections of gas masks and a Nazi uniform doth not a homey home make. Save it for your new home, where your grenade case can shine in all its polished glory. While Mein Kampf is an important historical document, it may not be considered in that light by someone whose family experienced discrimination and death in WWII. Just put it away until you sell or, at least, until the buyer is finished touring the home.

6. Racist/Sexist/Anythingist Items

Aside from the questionable sensibilities of anyone who thinks Ku Klux Klan themed items are great room décor, there is the issue of what your buyers will be impressed by. Many will not buy from you on principle. Even if the item is something that you find funny and inoffensive and don't take seriously, like a "blonde joke" poster, take it down until you have a new home to put it up in.

An Eye Stye is a common infection of the hair follicle of an eyelash, resembling a sore similar to a boil or a pimple in the gland at the edge of the eyelid which leads to blockage of the hair follicles that may become swollen, nuisance and painful to the touch. An Eye stye occurs when staphylococcal bacteria infect one of the tiny glands at the base of the eyelid hairs and then becomes inflamed. An infection bacterium is frequently transferred from one hair shaft to another when rubbing it to relieve itching.

Unless the swelling blocks vision, a stye do not affect vision and their symptoms include pain in the eye or in the eyelid, discomfort when blinking, sensitivity to light, swelling of the eyelid, blurred vision and redness or tearing of the eyelid. In most cases, a tiny pimple is present. An Eyes Stye develops in 3 to 7 days; usually fills with pus then burst spontaneously healing on their own when the infection drains. Pain and swelling subsides when the pressure is relieved.

This disease appears due to debilitated condition of the system. A diagnosis by a physician is not required but advisable because a chalazion can be mistaken for a stye. Chalazion is a non-bacterial lump on the eyelid caused by a blocked mucous gland under the eye. Your physician may examine your eyelid to determine the cause of the infection. This condition may also appear as result from blocking of the gland by dirt or due to error of refraction.

An Eye stye can be treated at home by applying very warm compresses for about ten minutes at each time, 3 to 4 times daily, using a wet, clean wash cloth to the tender area. This treatment will aid in the suppuration of the stye; suppuration refers to the forming of a head on an infection and the heat from compresses speeds up the white blood cells to fight the infection. Your physician may prescribe the applications of antibiotic drops or antibiotic cream for the stye. If you have frequent styes, the prescription of an antibiotic ointment will prevent the recurrence

Home Remedies for the Treatment of Eye Stye
- Rub clove spice in water and apply it over the stye to relief pain.

- Use a grated potato as a poultice to reduce swelling in inflamed eyes.

- Slit an aloe leaf lengthwise and place the pulpy side on the sore eye.

- Boil 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds with a cupful of water like an herbal tea preparation to wash the eyes 3-4 times a day.

- 1 teaspoon of turmeric in 2 cups of water until it reduces in half. Cool and strain 4-5 times through a fine muslin. Apply as eye drops 3-4 times a day

- Take a cup of water. Dissolve 2-3 granules of alum in it. Use as an eyewash.

- Guava leaves, warmed and placed on a warm damp cloth, and then used as a compress; reduce the redness, pain and swelling.

- Boil a handful of acacia leaves in two cups of water to make a decoction and apply it as compress on the eyelids

In rare cases, surgical drainage of the stye may be necessary if the stye is not responding to treatment or the infection is recurrent.

There are also a wide range of non-prescription products and topical medications for an eye stye, mostly made up of petroleum jelly and other emollients to keep the eye moisturized. These medications are useful to relieve the pain and stop the tearing, redness, itching, burning and stinging, but cannot treat the infection associated with the eye stye.

Eye Stye Tips
As preventive measures, never put your fingers in your infected eye because your hands are full of germs, and allow the eyes styes rupture on its own. Never ever "pop" a stye like a pimple because it may cause the infection to spread or transfer from one eye to another. Many eye infections are contagious, and eye styes do require a high standard of hygiene. The best advise to no sharing of eyes-makeup, towels or face cloths is and during insertion and removal of contact lens be sure to use good hygiene practices.

Pink Eye" (conjunctivitis)
Conjunctivitis is an infection of the conjunctiva - the thin, protective membrane that covers the surface of the eyeball and inner surface of the eyelids. When the conjunctiva becomes inflamed, it gives the eye a reddish tinge, hence the common name of "pink eye." It is caused by bacteria, viruses and other germs that are transmitted to the eye through contaminated hands, towels, eye makeup, contact lenses, etc. It can also result from exposure to irritants such as chemicals, smoke or dust, pollen and other allergens. It is not uncommon for conjunctivitis to occur in conjunction with a cold or flu.

Conjunctivitis is highly contagious and tends to be prevalent in crowded work spaces, daycare centers and schools. It easily spreads by direct person-to-person contact, in airborne droplets that are coughed or sneezed. It also spreads from sharing makeup, towels and washcloths. Although usually a minor eye infection that improves within two weeks, some types can develop into serious corneal inflammation and vision loss, if not treated quickly.

Signs and Symptoms
The primary sign is redness and inflammation of the white part of the eye. In addition, you may experience the following symptoms:

Swelling, burning and/or itching in one or both eyes
Excessive tearing or watering
Thick yellow discharge that crusts over the eyelashes, especially after sleep
Blurred vision or sensitivity to light
A gritty feeling in your eye

Types of Conjunctivitis

Bacterial conjunctivitis symptoms are: red eye(s), sticky discharge, gritty or foreign-body sensation and the eyelids may be stuck shut in the morning. Vision
is usually not affected. The most common types of bacteria causing the infection are staphylococcus (staph) or streptococcus (strep). If the discharge is severe, gonococcal (gonorrhea) conjunctivitis must be considered. Bacterial conjunctivitis is not related to the common cold or flu.
Treatment - Bacterial conjunctivitis is usually treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments that cover a broad range of bacteria. Warm compresses may be prescribed to help soothe the eye, and artificial tears prescribed to help clear discharges and dilute the bacterial toxins. Your eye doctor may also recommend eyelid scrubs.

Viral conjunctivitis is often associated with an upper respiratory tract infection, cold, or sore throat. It is usually caused by an adenovirus, the family responsible for upper-respiratory illnesses. Although viral conjunctivitis often clears spontaneously within a week, you should still see your eye doctor to ensure it doesn’t lead to a more serious infection involving the cornea.
Treatment - Antibiotics are ineffective against viruses. A warm compress may relieve some of the discomfort. Artificial tears may also provide symptomatic relief. For the worst cases, topical steroid drops may be prescribed to reduce the discomfort from inflammation. Just as a cold must run its course, so must this form of conjunctivitis, which usually lasts from 4 to 7 days but can persist for up to two weeks or more.

Allergic conjunctivitis results from a response to airborne pollen, dust, smoke, or environmental agents. Both eyes are usually affected and may itch, tear excessively and produce a stringy mucous discharge. You may also have other allergic reactions, such as a runny or itchy nose. Allergy tests can identify specific causes. Allergic conjunctivitis may also be caused by intolerance to substances such as cosmetics, perfume, or drugs.
Treatment - Topical eye drops are available to relieve symptoms. Cool compresses and artificial tears sometimes relieve discomfort in mild cases. Your eye doctor may recommend oral medications such as over-the-counter or prescription decongestant-antihistamines. Eyecare products such as contact lens solutions or eye drops can cause allergic reactions as well. Discontinue use if you notice allergic conjunctivitis symptoms following the use of a particular product.

Chemical conjunctivitis is caused by exposure to irritating liquids, powders, or fumes and requires immediate action. Common irritants in include chlorine, detergents, fuels, ammonia, smoke and pesticides.

Treatment - First, flush the eye with cold water continuously for 15 minutes. Then, apply an over-the-counter artificial tear or ocular decongestant for minor irritants such as chlorine from a swimming pool; for chemicals such as ammonia or bleach, emergency medical treatment is needed.

A tip on children and eye drops - A child's eyes do not need to be open to put in drops! Have children lie on their backs and close their eyes. Put 2 or 3 drops in the corners nearest the nose. It will pool there until they blink. Then it slips in without that annoying 'plunk' of a falling drop hitting the eyeball.

If you have conjunctivitis:

Don't touch or rub the infected eye(s).
Wear eyeglasses instead of contact lenses.
If you or someone in your household has conjunctivitis, be sure to wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and warm water.
Wash any discharge from your eyes twice a day using a fresh cotton ball. Discard used cotton ball and wash your hands with soap and warm water.
Wash your bed linens, pillowcases, and towels in hot water and detergent.
Avoid wearing eye makeup while you have conjunctivitis. To prevent reinfection, throw away your used make-up and replace.
Throw away disposable lenses; be sure to clean extended wear lenses and all eyewear cases. Replace contact lens solutions...they may be contaminated.
Wash your hands after applying eye drops or ointment to your eye or your child's eye.
If your child has bacterial or viral conjunctivitis, keep them home from school or day care until he or she is no longer contagious.
Prevention
Infective conjunctivitis is highly contagious and there is no foolproof way to avoid getting it. However, maintaining proper hygiene will minimize transmission.

To prevent allergic or chemical conjunctivitis, avoid exposure to irritants by keeping your environment well-ventilated, particularly when using products that produce smoke, chemicals or fumes. Always wear protective eyewear and clothing when handling chemicals.

Welcome back! Do you have those chickens ordered yet? Actually, before you get those bantys or Rhode Island Reds ordered, you will need to be prepared! Don't wait until the birds have arrived to figure out where you are going to put them. It's a lot of needless stress on you and the birds! Preparation in this area will most definitely contribute to a successful poultry operation.

To begin, you will need to provide adequate housing for the chickens. You will need to determine approximately how many chickens you will need to meet your family's demand for eggs. On average, a healthy, well-fed hen will produce 1 egg per day. There will be factors that may alter this, such as weather, light, feed, etc. Therefore, once you have determined the number of chickens you need, you can figure that an average sized chicken requires approximately 1.5-2 square feet inside the coup, and approximately 8 square feet outside in order to get

adequate exercise. You will also need to provide 1 nesting box per 4 laying hens. This should give you a rough estimate as to how big your coup needs to be. In addition to building or buying a shelter, you will need to make sure that this shelter provides adequate ventilation, is "predator" proof, and is well lit. If you want eggs, you will need good lighting! Your "outside" yard will not only need to be built in such a way as to keep the chickens in, but to keep the predators out! This includes predators that burrow, and those that fly. It is suggested that when you build your fence, bury the wire at least 6-12 inches deep, and toe the bottom of the wire out so that if "something" does dig, it will hit wire first. Further, you may need to provide a cover over your outside run. In addition, don't forget to provide a place for the birds to "roost" inside the coup for their evening snooze.

Of course you will need to have feeders and waterers for your chickens. It is best to have the type of feeders which can be hung from the ceiling. These feeders prevent the birds from contaminating the feed. Chickens require quite a bit of water, so it is important to have waterers inside and out of the coup. Older chickens can drink out of open pails or containers, but it is nice to also have a waterer from a feed store, as they are also designed to keep chicken poop out and clean water in...sorry, that's just a reality! Both feeders and waterers can be homemade and made cheaply. We have feeders made out of coffee cans, and waterers made with canning jars. Your chicken operation does not have to cost you a claw and a beak!

Now, the moment of truth! What type of chickens should you purchase? Really, it will depend on your expectations and needs. Some chickens are dual-purpose. In other words, they are good layers and are more bulky in size, so that when their best laying years are over (about 3 laying seasons), they can be butchered for meat. Some examples of this type of chicken is a Rhode Island Red, Plymouth Rock, Golden or Black Sex-Link, etc. Some chickens are better layers and do not get as big. One example of this is the bantam. These are small chickens that lay small eggs, but they are wonderful birds and good "brooders". A brooding chicken is one that will lay eggs, and then sit on them, and hatch out her chicks.

This is good if you want to have your own hatchery! I also recommend the Buff Orpington chicken for these purposes too. Many chickens today DO NOT sit on their eggs...it's been bred out of them! By the way, you DO NOT need a rooster in order for your chickens to lay eggs...you just won't really need the broody type birds in this case! There are many "exotic" type birds on the

market as well. One that is very popular is the Araucana. These birds are most noted for laying the pink or light green/blue eggs. We had a couple of Araucana, and the novelty was fun. However, I am more interested in lots of eggs, and these ladies had a tendency to stash their eggs so I could'nt find them! At any rate, there are many breeds, colors and arrays of chickens. Get yourself a catalog and read up for yourself on the many types of chickens. You'll be amazed, and you will be able to choose the type of bird that suits your needs the best.

Bluetooth technology is becoming increasingly popular in the world of electronics, both for the home and office environments, and even on the road. Bluetooth technology can be found not only in hands-free headset devices for your cell phone, but also in printers, computers, laptops, entertainment systems and more. With the increase in electronic and technology products we use in our daily lives, it is no wonder we would all like freedom from wires. Bluetooth is one technology that does just that.

Bluetooth technology works by transmitting low-powered radio signals in the 2.4 GHz range. Bluetooth wireless technology can penetrate solid objects, and unlike other technologies, it is omni-directional.
